Appraisal and Revalidation
Revalidation is the process by which licensed doctors are required to demonstrate on a regular basis that they are up to date and fit to practise. Revalidation aims to give extra confidence to patients that their doctor is being regularly checked by their employer and the GMC. Licensed doctors have to revalidate, usually every five years, by having regular appraisals with their employer that are based on our core guidance for doctors called Good medical practice. Patients can help their doctors improve their practice by providing them with regular feedback about the care they have received.
I have undertaken annual appraisal since my appointment as a consultant in 2007. I have undergone an enhanced appraisal this year and was revalidated by the GMC on the 28th May 2013.
Good Medical Practice is composed of 4 domains:
Domain 1 – Knowledge, skills and performance, Domain 2 – Safety and quality, Domain 3 - Communication, partnership and teamwork and Domain 4 - Maintaining trust. Evidence is submitted in each of these domains to allow an appraiser to assess practice. This includes results of audits of clinical practice, patient and colleague feedback and records of clinical professional development (educational meetings attended).
One piece of evidence which is used is the 360 degree assessment which includes feedback from colleagues and patients. I am happy to share my feedback with you on the links below. If you are a patient of mine and would like to leave some feedback then you can do so on the iwantgreatcare.com link below.
