NHS Practice - St Helier Hospital & St George's Hospital

Dr Bogle spoke at the Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust Public Meeting in 2013 about the work of the cardiac department

My NHS practice is divided between and St George's Hospital in Tooting, London and St Helier Hospital in Carshalton,  Surrey where I am the clinical lead for cardiology services at the Epsom & St Helier University NHS Trust.

St Helier Hospital:
I hold outpatient clinics on Wednesdays (9-1pm) in the Springall Unit at St Helier Hospital and Thursdays (9.30-1.30pm) Jubilee Health Centre in Wallington. In this clinic I supervise a team of cardiologists in-training including a specialist registrar, staff grade doctors and clinical fellows which means that sometimes it may not be possible for me to see you personally at every visit.

At St Helier Hospital we hold Rapid Access Chest Pain clinics, specialist consultant and nurse-led arrhythmia clinics, heart failure clinics and cardiac rehabilitation classes.  I am responsible for the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic and we see over a 1000 patients each year in this clinic all of them within 2 weeks of a GP referral. I am also responsible for management of patients admitted to the Coronary Care Unit at St Helier Hospital with my other consultant
colleagues and cardiac nursing staff. There are ward rounds each day on the Coronary Care and cardiology ward led by either myself or one of my colleagues.

The ECG Department in C block, Level 1 undertakes a complete range of non-invasive diagnostic procedures including ECG, exercise treadmill testing, Holter and Novacor monitoring, 24h ambulatory blood pressure moniotoring and pacemaker checks. We also carry out echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound) including transthoracic, transoesophageal and dobutamine stress studies. The work of the echo department and our commitment to the highest quality of service has been recognised and we are one of only 30 cardiac units in the UK to receive British Society of Echocardiography Departmental Accreditation. We also work with our radiology colleagues in the imaging department to provide CT coronary angiography and myocardial perfusion
scanning.

Radial access for angiography

St George's Hospital:

I have 3 sessions a week in the catheterisation laboratory at St George's Hospital on Monday morning and all day Tuesday where I carry out diagnostic coronary  angiography and coronary angioplasty and stenting. I have exeperience of >6,000 diagnostic angiograms and >2500 angioplasty procedures. I have a particular interest in pressure wire and intravascular ultrasound procedures. Most angiograms and angioplasty procedures are performed via the radial artery in the wrist with patients being admitted to the Radial Lounge. This route of vascular access reduces the risk of bleeding complications and allows patients to recover from the procedure whilst sitting down rather than having to lie flat for a prolonged period of time. We were one of the first units in the UK to introduce the concept of a Radial Lounge which provides a more comfortable area for recovery than a traditional hospital ward. St George's Hospital is one of 8 Heart Attack Centres in London. I also participate in the primary angioplasty on call service where I am responsible for the treatment of patients with acute heart attack.
