Conn's Syndrome
Increased secretion of aldosterone is an underdiagnosed cause of hypertension.
The classic presentation of this condition is hypertension and hypokalaemia
It may be caused by either an aldosterone producing adenoma or bilateral idiopathic adrenal hyperplasia
There are some rare forms as well such as Familial hyperaldosteronism (Type 1 also known as glucocorticoid remediable aldosteronism)
Screening for this condition is recommended when:
1. There is hypertension and spontaneous or low dose diuretic induced hypokalaemia
2. Severe hypertension or drug resistant hypertension
3. Hypertension with an incidental adrenal adenoma
4. All hypertensive 1st degree relatives of patients with primary aldosteronism
